I am not crazy, why would I need counselling?
Life often throws challenges our way and sometimes things can get on top of us. At times like this we could do with a helping hand. Having someone to talk things over with, someone who will listen to any concerns that we may have, help us find a solution and generally supporting us through the difficult times is what counselling is all about – a problem shared is a problem halved.
Will anyone find out I am seeing a counsellor?
My private practice offers a safe, secure haven in which to address your concerns. Everything we discuss in our sessions is private and confidential. I will make brief notes in our sessions and I am the only person who will have access to these notes, which will be kept in a secure locked fire proof cabinet. I will not normally discuss your concerns with anyone other than my Supervisor unless I have reason to believe that someone, especially a child, is at risk of serious harm. However, there are also instances where I am legally bound to break confidentiality. I comply with the General Data Protection Regulation GDPR which came into force on 25th May 2018. Please see my full terms and conditions. for more details.
How many sessions will I need?
What each client brings is different, and what they need is also different, so to put a specific time on it is near impossible. This is something that we will negotiate between us. We might agree to work together for a few weeks (usually 4 or 6 weeks) and then review things. Should the counselling continue thereafter, there will be periodic reviews of that work.
What happens during a session in therapy?
The way I work is by asking you questions, and this helps me to listen to you and you can also learn by hearing yourself say something out loud. Sometimes counselling is called a “talking cure” and we can talk here about anything that may be concerning you at the moment. If I ask you something that you don’t want to answer, you don’t have to answer it. Often the public’s misconceptions of therapy, especially sex therapy, can be very different from what actually goes on in the room. At no time will you be examined physically or asked to remove your clothes, or to perform a sexual act. My sessions consists only of talking therapy.
